Within: A Short Story by Joshua Scribner

The Book:

Source for ‘The Book’ section : From Goodreads
Reminiscent of Joshua Scribner’s novels FEAR AND REPULSION and SEED, Within follows psychologist Dr. Caffer as he tracks unspeakable evil to the deepest recesses of the human mind.

The View:

I don’t read short stories but I am going through an experimental phase and have been attempting to do the ‘not-so-obvious’. One such experiment was to download and read ‘Within: A Short Story’ on my kindle.

Dr. Caffer is a hypnotist who is treating his patient Beth. Beth has a fear of children and anything that represents children terrifies her. This is now posing a problem in her family as her husband wants to have a child. Dr.Caffer hypnotizes Beth and takes her to her past. At seven years old, she wakes up one night, takes an apartment key from her parents and visits apartment #34 in the third floor to see the dolls. The doll talks to her and asks her to take its hand, she does as asked and when she comes out of this scene the apartment building is on fire. Who caused the fire and how is it related to Beth’s current life. Will Dr.Caffer help Beth live a normal life without fear?

The story was not to the mark and the only saving grace was the writing. I enjoyed the descriptions and the language used but nothing more. In short, ‘Within’ was too short and had absolutely no character or plot development. Rated a 2 on 5.
