Where She Went by Gayle Forman

The Book:

Source for ‘The Book’ section : From Goodreads

It’s been three years since the devastating accident . . . three years since Mia walked out of Adam’s life forever.

Now living on opposite coasts, Mia is Juilliard’s rising star and Adam is LA tabloid fodder, thanks to his new rock star status and celebrity girlfriend. When Adam gets stuck in New York by himself, chance brings the couple together again, for one last night. As they explore the city that has become Mia’s home, Adam and Mia revisit the past and open their hearts to the future – and each other.

Told from Adam’s point of view in the spare, lyrical prose that defined If I Stay, Where She Went explores the devastation of grief, the promise of new hope, and the flame of rekindled romance.

The View:

I won this book from Sheila of Book Journey after I desperately wanted it. Her review put this book among the ‘must haves’ and I was so glad to win it. Of course it took me longer than expected to get to it with all the madness of everyday life and tons of catching up with my TBR pile.

‘Where She Went’ is a strong emotional read and while at first appearance it is anything but emotional you will realize it as you delve deeper. The romance between the two lead characters is underplayed though they seem to have a strong connection. The love, lust, confusion, betrayal, promises and anger are strongly portrayed and provide a wonderful environment for the characters to react too.

The story is told from Adam’s perspective but he still manages to give an unbiased narration. On the exterior, Adam is a really cool rock star and everyone would want to live his life, but on the inside he is bitter and angry. He has a fragile relationship with his band mates and does not even stay in the same hotel as they do. The reason for his downtrodden life is ‘Mia’ – he still misses her and is desperate to fill the gap she has left years back. Mia is a welcome relief. She is sensible and sensitive and her emotions are well described. I loved the time they both spend together in New York as it unravels a different side of their feelings for one another.

‘Where She Went’ is a sequel to ‘If I Stay’ and while this book is excellently written it would still appear incomplete if you have not read the first book. That said, I enjoyed the second book much more than the first. Rated a 4 on 5 with promises that you will enjoy this book.
